The quick answer

Pack by the order you will need things: documents first, screening items next, then your in-flight essentials. Check both the airline’s bag allowance and CATSA’s item rules; they answer different questions.

Give every pocket a job

Use one easy-to-reach pocket for boarding documents, one pouch for cables, and one place for liquids. Pack at home as though you need to find an item with one hand. A tidy bag is more useful than a complicated packing system that you cannot remember when tired.

Check the container, not the amount left

For ordinary liquids, gels and aerosols at Canadian screening, CATSA specifies containers of 100 ml or less in one clear, resealable bag no larger than one litre. A large bottle with only a little product remaining does not become a travel-size container. Exceptions exist, so check the official page for your item.

Avoid a last-minute bag surprise

Security acceptance does not mean your bag meets an airline’s weight or dimensions. Check the operating airline and the fare you bought, especially when connecting between carriers. Leave a little room for a coat or items you may have to move if a cabin bag is checked at the gate.

Repack before walking away

After screening, move to the repacking area and check your documents, phone, bag and loose items before heading to the gate. Follow the screening officer’s instructions: procedures can vary with the equipment in use. Do not copy a social-video shortcut that conflicts with staff directions.

Your takeaway checklist

  • Confirm airline size and weight limits.
  • Check restricted items before packing.
  • Keep screening items easy to reach.
  • Count your belongings after screening.

Does a carry-on packing hack guarantee faster screening?

No. Queue length, screening equipment and additional checks vary. Organization helps you prepare; staff instructions take priority.
