SAVE MONEY · Split airport taxi fare
How to split an airport taxi fare fairly, including fees and extra stops
Agree the actual vehicle fare, extras and rounding before sharing a cab from a Canadian airport.

The quick answer
Agree what is being split before the trip: the actual vehicle fare, known fees, optional tip and any extra-stop arrangement. Equal shares work when everyone agrees; different routes may call for a different plan.
Ask for the total first
Find out whether the provider’s price is metered, fixed or an estimate. Ask how tolls, airport fees and additional stops are handled. A number displayed in a planning tool is not the provider’s confirmed fare. Clarify whether the quote covers the whole vehicle or each passenger.
Separate equal shares from equal distance
Two passengers travelling different distances may prefer a different arrangement. Discuss it before boarding rather than at the first drop-off. There is no universal fair-share formula for every route. Write the agreement in simple language that everyone understands, including what happens if the total changes.
Round once, at the end
An illustrative CA$10 total divided by three people cannot be paid as identical cent amounts. One person pays CA$3.34 and two pay CA$3.33. That adds back to CA$10 exactly. Our public calculator handles this remainder; it does not choose who should pay the extra cent.
Make payment expectations explicit
Decide who pays the transport provider and how others will settle their shares. Do not share banking passwords, card details or verification codes in group chat. ArriveTogether does not collect cab fares, hold deposits or guarantee another traveller’s payment. Keep receipts where available.
Your takeaway checklist
- Confirm the real total and fee basis.
- Agree extra stops before boarding.
- Check that rounded shares add up.
- Keep payment credentials private.
Does ArriveTogether charge or collect the shared taxi fare?
No. Travellers arrange transport and payment themselves. The calculator divides an entered amount and is not a live quote.
